Stop at the ancient Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz, founded in 1133 by Leopold the Holy. This romanesque basilica has a contrasting gothic style chancel and an interesting Chapter House, which was once the living quarters of the order and which now contains the tomb of Frederic the Bellicose, the last of the Babenbergers. On to Mayerling,
the romantic hunting lodge, where the heir to the throne, Archduke Rudolf and the Baroness Marie Vetsere carried out their suited part. Through the beautiful Helenental, the summer resort of Johann Strauss, the tour continues to Baden, famous as early as Roman times for its sulphur springs and thermal baths. Lunch will be served either in a castle-type restaurant in Baden. |
