The Prague International Marathon (PIM) is celebrating its 15th birthday. Last year, a record-breaking total 35,000 runners from 81 countries participated in all the running events connected with the Prague Marathon, and the organisers hope that this number will even be exceeded in this jubilee year. Many competitive and non-competitive races, in-line skating

competitions, eco walks, and an accompanying programme await both spectators and athletes. The high point of the entire event is the Marathon Weekend (9–10 May 2009). An exhibition, Arrivals, tells the Marathon’s 15‑year history. It is open to the public in the premises of Prague Airport until 28 May 2009. The exhibition also presents the works of students at NABA Academy in Milan, Italy, who have depicted the marathon phenomenon through their artworks. The Prague International Marathon has also become a phenomenon, as it now stands among the prestigious top 10 of the world’s marathons. During the Marathon Weekend (9–10 May 2009), the athletes will have a really full program. The Corporate Marathon that premiered successfully last year will be there again this year, too. This time, though, like the main marathon, the Corporate Marathon starts on 10 May at 9:15 a.m. at the Old Town Square. Four colleagues from each company will be able to share the running in a relay over the 42.195 kilometres. If you don’t care to venture racing in a team, try any of the non-competitive races. The 2-kilometre Eco Walk also starts at the Old Town Square on 10 May at 9:15 a.m., while the Family Marathon (4.2 km) starts at Prague’s Exhibition Grounds on the same day. Children up to 15 years of age will pay no entrance fee. The centre of all the events, the Marathon Sport Expo, can be found at the Exhibition Grounds in Prague 7. This will be a place of concerts, sport shows, competitions, autograph signings, and the traditional Pasta Party on Saturday. On 9 May, take your in-line skates with you to the Exhibition Grounds. The 6.5-km In-Line Party that awaits you will lead you through Prague’s popular Stromovka Park. Moreover, the Marathon Music Festival will fire up and amuse the runners and spectators during both weekend days. The PIM’s sports events definitely do not end in May. September’s Tesco Grand Prix (12 September) will be held again for racers to run in beautiful night lighting. You can register for the non-competitive charity Tesco Running for Health (4 km) or to test your strength in the Women's Race (5 km) or Men’s Race (10 km). The Embassy Race will be run again this year, too, and so will be the Barmen's Race in which the participants will compete in a non-traditional athletic discipline: a hurdle race while carrying a tray.
