Next weekend, 20th and 21st June has an interesting event for all Praguers in store - the 5th year of ‘Pilsen Days in Senate’ that will be held in Wallenstein Gardens of the Senate. Pilsen Days will offer folk culture, beer and sparkling wine tasting, which together with traditional cooper crafts, concerts and various events for children will make the day a quality event. Additionally, the 5th year is held in token of the west-Bohemian town Pilsen’s bid to become the 2015 European Capital of Culture. “The programme was pieced together to entertain the whole family and ensure that its members can spend an enjoyable day. We want to bring the most interesting activities on offer to Pilsen,” revealed head of Pilsen Council Marketing Department, Jana Komišová.Praguers can look forward to the Pilsner folk ensemble Mladina, funk band Buster Nixon, Roma band Le čhavendar, as well as the performance Johannes Doctor Faust by Theatre Alfa and many other surprises. The event will also feature the band Monkey Business which was invited by the organisers mainly due to its Pilsner origin. Some significant places of tourist interest will be introduced in Wallenstein Gardens: Plzeňský Prazdroj brewery, the biggest Czech science-centre Techmania that is situated in the premises of Škodovka company, the company Bohemia Sekt, the University of West Bohemia and the local Zoo. The event also includes an exhibition dedicated to the cultural facilities of the city, accompanied by commentaries of known Pilsen personalities. City Pilsen aims to become the European Capital of Culture in six years time, and the project will be introduced at Pilsen Days. The candidacy was announced last September and the application needs to be submitted by 31st October. According to unofficial information, the city is likely to compete with cities Ostrava, Hradec Králové and Brno; there are also talks about Uherské Hradište and Karlovy Vary. The title is awarded annually to two selected EU member state cities. In 2015 the title will go to one Belgian and one Czech city. |
